Commissions:
RICE University's “Sound of Light II” grant - Kyong Mee Choi received a commission to create a new installation piece, Weaving for James Turrells Twilight Epiphany Skyspace through Rice University's “Sound of Light II” grant. Utilizing 14 channel audio system with light changes Weaving portrays the image of water in an open sky. Along with the water sounds, the piece incorporates the 4th movement of Tchaikovsky's Symphony Number 6, also known as the Pathétique Symphony, in which the composer found appropriate musical ideas to increase the gesture of openness. Weaving through the symphony's melodic line and water's vivid sonic presence, the piece gradually attempts to expand its nature to an infinite space. The premiere is scheduled to be in 2025.
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's Research Board grant - Kyong Mee Choi received a commission to write a piece for violin and piano by Salley Koo with the Research Board Grant of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The unreal never lived for violin and piano, written for Salley Koo, will be premiered in 2025.
Not(h)ing for solo piano was commissioned by and written for pianist Kuang-Hao Huang who will premiere in February 2025. The title "Not(h)ing" indicates noting nothingness, which implies "nothingness" governs everything before all concepts that the mind creates through consciousness.
